Arkitech delivers significant efficiency gains onboard MSC cruise ship

Press Release | Amsterdam, The Netherlands | 17 July 2024

  • Using real-time analytics, Arkitech’s turn-key solution enables up to 12% increase in chiller efficiency on board the luxury MSC Cruises ship
  • The gains equate to 1600 Megawatt yearly energy savings, equivalent to removing 687 electrical cars from European roads or removing the yearly energy consumption of 400 European homes

Innovative technology developed by Arkitech delivers substantial efficiency improvements to the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system onboard MSC Magnifica. Leveraging AI and machine learning, the technology analyzes data from over 1,500 sensors on the MSC Cruises’ ship, enhancing chiller efficiency by up to 12% and achieving predicted annual savings of 1600MW which is equivalent to removing the 687 cars from European roads. This efficiency is realized without compromising the comfortable climate for the 3.500 passengers and crew onboard the 15-year-old vessel.

In response to progressively stringent environmental regulations and increasing stakeholder focus on carbon footprint reduction, Arkitech’s technology platform contributes to solving this major challenge to the maritime industry. Arkitech’s plug-and-play platform offers passenger vessel operators immediate energy savings since the system can be seamlessly installed during normal operations. In addition to providing a safe and comfortable environment for passengers and crew, optimizing HVAC performance contributes towards compliance with regulations such as the International Maritime Organization’s Carbon Intensity Indicator and the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme.

The HVAC system onboard cruise ships and ferries is one of the largest power consumers after propulsion, making energy efficiency a priority. Arkitech’s solution minimizes the cost and environmental impact of this system. It works by continuously optimizing the HVAC system’s temperature set points in response to variable conditions including weather, seawater temperature, mobility, proportion of passenger capacity filled, time of day and position in port or at sea.

“Controlling the most energy-demanding processes onboard – propulsion, hotel operations and HVAC – is increasingly important,” said Ivana Melillo, Head of Energy Efficiency, MSC Cruise Management (UK) Limited. “Reducing energy needs can decrease fuel consumption and emissions. Thanks to the project, we expect to save 10-12 percent of HVAC energy consumption, equating to nearly 1 ton of fuel saved daily. The greatest emissions savings come from the fuel we don’t use.”

“The results achieved by our system onboard MSC Magnifica exceeded our expectations.” said Sander Huijer, CEO of Arkitech. “With more ships and product improvements in the pipeline, we look forward to further supporting MSC in reaching their sustainability goals”.

The MSC Magnifica project was delivered with the support of ABB Marine and Ports. “As maritime organizations seek to enhance operational efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint, innovative technologies like Arkitech’s solution are well positioned to support this growing demand,” said Alessandro De Santis, Manager Service Area South Europe, ABB Marine & Ports. “The collaboration with Arkitech and MSC Cruises emphasizes our commitment to delivering measurable energy savings and operational improvements through technology. The project’s success is yet another testament to our leadership in advancing efficiency and sustainability in the maritime industry.”
